How Mechanical Medicine Can Improve Your Health and Wellness
Apr 13th 2011 · by Tony Maree Torrey
Next of the 5 types of medicine is mechanical, or physical medicine.
This type of medicine includes such things as exercise, massage, physical therapy, and chiropractic as well as in extreme cases surgery.
This is the type of medicine that involves manipulation of the body or parts of the body in order to produce some kind of desired effect, such as strengthening of the physical systems, relief from pain and miss alignment or, when the other types of medicine fail, removal of parts of the body that have become diseased. Obviously this last option is one we would all prefer to avoid and certainly should not be considered as your first line of defense in an overall wellness strategy.
Mechanical low back pain remains the second most common symptom-related reason for seeing a physician in the United States. Of the US population, 85% will experience an episode of Mechanical Lower Back Pain at some point during their lifetime. So it makes sense to do what we can to build up our muscle and skeletal structures in order to defend against this common complaint.
I’m a big fan of empowering people to help themselves so as you can imagine my favorite form of mechanical medicine is the kind you can do for yourself. Yes, that’s right – exercise.
Now I know this can be a trigger word for people, especially if you have either never been in the habit of have fallen out of the habit. Never fear, I will be talking in future posts about quick and easy ways you can begin to incorporate this healthy affirming activity into your lifestyle.
So for now try to remember to keep your eyes on the prize when you step into the exercise arena and this will help you get over the hump and on to claiming this as a healthy habit.
Here’s a list of the 7 benefits of exercise adapted from the Mayo Clinic to get you excited.
1. Exercise improves your mood:
Physical activity can stimulate your brain chemistry into feelings of happiness and relaxation. Your increased stamina and physical health can alleviate depression and boost your confidence.
2. Exercise combats chronic diseases:
Regular physical activity can help you prevent — or manage — high blood pressure, cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, as well as osteoporosis and certain types of cancer.
If you are sweating, you are detoxifying.
3. Exercise helps you manage your weight:
We often think about the importance of this in the context of attractiveness but it is important to note that many studies have shown that
physical inactivity and overweight adversely affected longevity
4. Exercise boosts your energy level:
Regular physical activity can leave you breathing easier.
When your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you’ll have more energy to do the things you enjoy.
5. Exercise promotes better sleep:
A good night’s sleep can improve your concentration, productivity and mood. And you guessed it — physical activity is sometimes the key to better sleep. Just don’t exercise too close to bedtime, you may be too energized to fall asleep.
6. Exercise can put the spark back into your sex life:
Regular physical activity can lead to enhanced arousal for women, and men who exercise regularly are more likely to be reliable in the bedroom.
7. Exercise can be fun!
Physical activity doesn’t have to be just limited to the obvious. Expand your definition to the concept of vigorous movement of any kind. So head for the gym or take the dog for a walk, take up dancing lessons or time yourself and clean your house at top speed.
If you’re moving and breathing it counts and if its fun you’ll more likely do it again!
So I suggest you start thinking of exercise in the context of medicine and prescribe yourself at least 3 doses a week to build your health and wellbeing.
